Towards a cleaner Sri Lanka - No-Kunu Campaign

A cleaner country ensures a better future. Cleanliness is a major requirement for a better life, but unfortunately people tend to forget this when it comes to public places. The Beira Lake, located in the heart of the city of Colombo, along with its banks, is a place that has undergone much damage due to pollution. It has suffered intently for years by now, and the result, as most people living around the area must have witnessed, is a lake full of filth and a malodorous aroma filling the air.
As Sri Lankans, it is our duty to keep our country clean, and a cleaner country implies a better future for generations to come. It was with this responsibility in mind that the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa along with the Interact Club of D.S. Senanayake College and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Colombo West volunteered and supported the No-Kunu campaign to clean the 3 km Beira Lake Walkway on DR Wijewardena Mawatha, Colombo 10, on the 21st of July 2018.
With the immense assistance of the sponsors who provided the volunteers with gloves, mouth masks and garbage bags, the campaign flowed smoothly for an expanse of approximately 5 hours, from around 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. The Rotaractors, along with the support of the Interactors, succeeded in taking a commendable effort to convert the Beira Lake Walkway into an immaculate area. The volunteers were first divided into sub groups and each group was assigned a particular area on the walkway to be cleaned-up so as to achieve a supreme result. Each sub group was determined to accomplish its best and the volunteers managed to clean the place by picking up all the non biodegradable wastes and sweeping off the dried-up leaves that covered the walkway.
It was a day well-spent for all the volunteers and the result of the service done was indeed admirable. Any passerby must have noticed the transformation, and it is our hope that they would take action to maintain its cleanliness further, now that the initial steps have already been laid.
