TogetherSL

As written by Rtr. Malshi Parindya…

“TogetherSL” is a tremendous effort launched by Rotaract District 3220 that aims at serving and developing communities across the island. This mammoth initiative partners Rotaract clubs from all over the country into teams, to undertake projects catering to various aspects of Community Service.

“Ape Gama” is such a subproject under this all-new district scheme, organized by ‘Team Scorpions’ consisting of Rotaract clubs of Colombo Midtown, Excellence, Faculty of Law – University of Colombo, NIBM, Raffles Colombo, Saegis Campus, University Alumni and University of Moratuwa. This project will focus on developing the rural community of Molkawa in the Kalutara district, and project planning is currently in full swing.

A battalion of fifteen, we visited the village of Molkawa, bright and early in the morning on the 10th of July to get some perspective on what we are dealing with.

We met up with the principal and gained his insights on what can be done for the school and village. Once the talking was over, we embarked on an inspection visit around the school premises. Here we were able to note the school’s lack of a library, main hall, IT lab, and playground. The principal continued to inform us about various kinds of difficulties faced by the students and the people of the village. This helped us understand the background of this village and relate to the perspectives and plights of its villagers more. We were also able to determine the nature of the project scope and run through some of our plans for the village and for the improvement of the school’s facilities for a better standard of education delivery.

Our next stop was the village temple situated near the school. Here we were able to further discuss the conditions of the village with the temple’s venerable head priest. In spite of the village belonging to the Western Province, we were still quite taken aback on hearing some of the stories of the difficulties and societal problems faced by its villagers.

After taking our leave from the head priest, we next went on to enjoy the natural beauty of the village. The village is covered in lush greenery. We also got the opportunity to behold the beauty of the magnificent Makeli Falls, a scenic tourist attraction in the village proximity.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable day for those of us who visited Molkawa and we returned back to our homes close to dusk. However, this journey made us even more determined to help in any way we can to resolve the issues faced by the beautiful people of this beautiful village and uplift their lifestyles so that they can hope for better futures for themselves. Please do stay tuned with us for all the work we hope to do under this inspiring and nurturing initiative. Here’s to the impending success of ‘Ape Gama’ and ‘Together Sri Lanka’.
