First Experience as a Delegate

At the beginning, I did not have any idea on what Model United Nations was. All I was aware of the Model United Nations was that it is a kind of a model of the original United Nations in which the participants would have to represent a country and discuss on an issue. As a Quantity Surveying Undergraduate, I did not expect that I would ever be able to get any further idea than what I already knew and to participate in an MUN conference representing a country. However, the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa offered me the privilege of participating in an MUN conference for the first time in my life. It was a great experience for me and I found it really interesting. The Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa did not let any of the participants to lose their confidence and their desire to participate in such an event. Instead they always encouraged us and kept training us in the mission towards creating young, motivated and confident delegates.

Besides the fact that we had limited time for the training sessions, RMMUN did its best to prepare us as well as to make us aware on the proceedings of an MUN conference and all other related knowledge required by a novice delegate. The RMMUN was very dedicated in the aforementioned mission by conducting various practice sessions such as practice debates, practice conferences, practice speeches and many more events in order to craft ourselves as future delegates. They had invited various award winning guest speakers and resource personnel who are very well experienced in this field for guiding us. We had the privilege of interacting with them and discussing the issues we had related to MUN with them.

I found this a great opportunity for the undergraduates to develop their public speaking skills, to improve their fluency in English since English is an indispensable language in the corporate sector as well as in global affairs. Further, RMMUN helps to provide a vast exposure to global issues, policies, laws and various societies and cultures in various countries around the globe to the undergraduates of University of Moratuwa, which I personally believe is really essential since most of the undergraduates are just framed inside a technical background and are not aware of the proceedings in the global context. And also, RMMUN helped me to develop my research skills as well since I was not a person who was very clever in conducting researches on global related matters. Other than that, RMMUN provided me a leisure and fun time filled with memories and also it led me to get to know various personalities in the peer batches as well from upper batches, enabling me to grow and strengthen my network.

Finally, I would like to say that there can be mistakes, but it is your desire to proceed what matters the most. Even though I had no any idea on the MUN conferences or proceedings, I was able to win the “Best Delegate Award” in the very first conference that I participated thanks to RMMUN. Therefore, if you are an undergraduate who has a desire to try new things, I suggest RMMUN as a great opportunity.
