Nena Aruna 2024/25: A Journey of Hope, Learning, and Love

Nena Aruna 2024/25: A Journey of Hope, Learning, and Love

We are immensely proud to announce that Nena Aruna 2024/25 has been honored with the Gold Award for the Most Outstanding Project under the Rotary Focus Area of Basic Education and Literacy. This recognition is not merely a trophy, it stands as a testament to the countless late nights, the tireless weekend Zoom sessions, and the anxious students who walked away with newfound confidence and bright smiles. At the heart of this journey was a simple, yet powerful belief “Every child deserves a chance to learn, grow, and succeed.” To our dedicated team, the inspiring students who gave us purpose, and the teachers who placed their trust in us, this achievement belongs to you. Your unwavering commitment made Nena Aruna more than just a project; it became a movement of hope and transformation.

When we first dreamed up Nena Aruna, it was just a dream. A few of us sat down, thinking, “What if we could help O/L students who feel left behind?” We weren’t sure how big it would get. We just knew we wanted to do something.

Fast forward a few months, and that little dream had reached over 3,000 students across 51 schools in 10 districts. Not through magic, but through the heart of over 80 passionate volunteers - university students just like you and me - who chose to give, teach, and uplift.

Three Phases. One Purpose.

1. Paper Discussions - Back to the Classroom

We kicked off with two in person seminars, one in Colombo, one in Gampaha. We sat face to face with students, cracked open past papers, and saw firsthand the sparkle when something finally clicked. Some kids had never had one on one support before. That day, they did.

2. Online Kuppiya - Learning Has No Borders

From that point on, we went digital not just for convenience, but for connection. We ran 25 online sessions via Zoom, covering Maths and Science. Students from Anuradhapura to Galle logged in, asked questions, practiced live, and cheered each other on. It felt like one big, supportive classroom, from every corner of Sri Lanka.

3. Hari Paara - Not Just Subjects. Futures.

Then came something even deeper: career and A/L guidance. We called it Hari Paara , the "Right Path." We didn’t just talk about grades. We asked students what they wanted to become. Some didn’t even know they could choose. By the end, they were planning degrees, dreaming of jobs, thinking bigger.

Gold Award - But the Real Win Was the Smiles

Yes, Nena Aruna 2024/25 was awarded the prestigious Gold Award for the Most Outstanding Project in line with Basic Education and Literacy. And yes, we are beyond grateful for the recognition. But when we reflect on what truly matters, the real victory lies not in the trophy but in the moments that moved us.

It’s in the quiet pride of the boy who whispered, “I finally get algebra,” after weeks of struggling. In the bright eyed girl who said she wants to be an engineer after years of believing science wasn’t meant for her. In the schools that not only welcomed us but asked us to return for their Grade 10 and Commerce students too. And perhaps most touchingly, it’s in the shy volunteer who found her voice, led her first session, and now dreams of becoming a teacher.

These are the moments that shine brighter than any plaque. These are our real gold.

Nena Aruna succeeded because we chose to listen first, not just to what we assumed students needed, but to what they truly asked for. We showed up, not merely to teach, but to understand their world, their struggles, and their strengths. We brought learning to life with stories, quizzes, games, and even the occasional meme because we knew that engagement begins with joy. Most importantly, we made it human. Every child was seen, heard, and supported, because we believe that education is not just about knowledge, but about kindness, connection, and care.

🌱 What’s Next?

We’re just getting started.

There’s a huge call for us to support Grade 10 students, and to include Commerce and ICT subjects. And we’re ready. Our volunteers have shown that love, when paired with learning, can truly move mountains.

So yes, there will be a next Nena Aruna. And maybe, just maybe, it will reach even further.

💬 Final Words from the Heart

This wasn’t just a project. This was a promise, that no matter where you live, or what your background is, you deserve the right tools, the right people, and the right hope to chase your dreams.

To our students: You taught us as much as we taught you.
To our volunteers: You made magic real.
To our community: This award belongs to you.

Let’s keep lighting the path of Nena Aruna, because every child deserves a sunrise.
