International Tourism Day – September 27

"Travel makes one modest; you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world." – Gustave Flaubert

Every year on September 27, the world comes together to celebrate International Tourism Day. It also known as World Tourism Day. This occasion reminds us that tourism is more than just visiting places for fun. It is a bridge that connects cultures, drives economies, and builds mutual understanding among people.

The idea of organized tourism dates back to the 17th century, when those wealthy Europeans embarked the “Grand Tour.” This journey was not only for leisure but also for education, focusing on art, history, and cultural heritage. With the Industrial Revolution, advances in technology and transportation like railways, steamships, and later buses and cars , opened the doors for wider groups of society to travel. The 19th century witnessed the birth of the very first travel agency opening the doors for planned and guided traveling experience for people.

Following World War II, affordable air travel, better working conditions, and rising social welfare transformed tourism into a global industry. Until then, it has continued to expand and evolve, touching almost every part of the globe.

Tourism has grown into one of the world’s largest economic sectors. Employing about 1 in 10 people globally. For some nations, tourism contributes more than 20% of GDP, making it the major lifeline for millions. Beyond economics, it enriches lives by giving people access to the variety of world’s cultural treasures and natural wonders, also reminding us of our shared humanity throughout the world.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) established World Tourism Day in 1979, with the first celebration taking place in 1980. The chosen date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes in 1970. Each year, the day highlights a theme reflecting current challenges and opportunities within the sector.

For 2023, the focus was on investments in sustainable tourism, encouraging governments, private sectors, and communities to rethink how tourism can support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic made it clear that a new, more resilient model of tourism is needed. One that balances prosperity with care for the planet and respect for local communities.

Tourism’s impact goes far beyond revenue. It creates jobs, sparks innovation, revitalizes local traditions, and fosters cross cultural dialogue. However, unchecked tourism can also strain the environment and disrupt social harmony. That’s why today’s challenge is to promote responsible travel where visitors respect the land, culture, and people they encounter.

Celebrating International Tourism Day means embracing a vision where travel benefits both people and planet. By encouraging eco-friendly practices such as  supporting local businesses, and respecting cultural heritage. By that we can ensure that tourism remains a positive force for future generations to come.

International Tourism Day is not just about traveling. It’s about traveling with purpose. It is a reminder that every journey can create opportunities, protect cultures, and build a more sustainable and connected world.
