19 August - World Humanitarian Day
World humanitarian day is celebrated every year on 19 August. The day was designated in memory of the 19 August 2003 bombing on the Canal Hotel in Iraq, killing 22 people including the chief humanitarian in Iraq, Sergio Vieria de Mello. In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly established the day as World Humanitarian Day (WHD).
The theme of this year is,
A global challenge for climate action in solidarity with the people who need it most.
The United Nations highlights the immediate human cost of the climate crisis by pressuring world leaders to get worthwhile climate action for the world’s most vulnerable people.
In 2021, 235 million people will need humanitarian assistance. This number has risen to 1 in 33 people worldwide - a significant increase from 1 in 45 at the launch of the Global Humanitarian Overview 2020, which was already the highest figure in decades. The UN and partner organizations aim to assist 160 million people most in need across 56 countries and will require a total of $35 billion to do so.
Give value to humanity. Your help may change someone else’s whole life completely. Because love, humanity are necessities, not luxuries. To celebrate World Humanitarian Day, there’s no need for big things and just start to do small things with great love. Be kind and understand humanitarian purposes. It could be donating to charity or helping the Covid-19 victims through fieldwork- our share is important like any other. Even sharing about it on social media helps to create awareness, which is a very necessary task.
